Lead-free ammunition should be as accessible as possible to the people California relies upon to protect wildlife.
WHO WE ARE
The California Lead-Free Coalition brings together conservation organizations, hunting and sporting groups, ranchers, farmers, ammunition manufacturers, retailers, researchers, and other stakeholders to improve the availability, affordability, and accessibility of lead-free ammunition throughout California.
Practical access supports wildlife conservation, compliance with California law, and the continued participation of hunters and land managers.
WHY IT MATTERS
Conservation succeeds when people can get the products they're required to use
Current California law requires non-lead ammunition when taking animals by firearm anywhere in the state. But market availability and higher cost make it hard for some users to comply. Face-to-face purchasing requirements limit access further, local stores don't consistently stock lead-free ammunition, and shortages of rimfire products, particularly .22 Long Rifle, make the problem worse.
Improving access to lawful, lead-free ammunition strengthens compliance, supports wildlife recovery, and benefits hunting, ranching, and farming.
WHAT ENDORSERS SUPPORT
Our four guiding principles
Endorsement means supporting these principles. It requires no financial contribution, lobbying, or participation in specific activities.
1
Reduce impacts to non-target species
Ingestion of spent lead ammunition can be prevented by using lead-free products.
2
Advance lead-free ammunition
Continued innovation, manufacturing, and distribution of high quality lead-free ammunition benefits hunters, wildlife, and future conservation.
3
Make it readily available
Hunters, ranchers, landowners, and wildlife managers should have practical access to the products they need to comply with California law.
4
Encourage collaboration
Successful conservation depends on partnership among organizations, hunters, ranchers, farmers, manufacturers, retailers, researchers, and public agencies.
