WHAT WE STAND FOR
Our Principles
Lead-free ammunition should be as accessible as possible to the people California relies upon to protect wildlife.
WHAT WE STAND FOR
Our Principles
Lead-free ammunition should be as accessible as possible to the people California relies upon to protect wildlife.
WHY IT MATTERS
Conservation succeeds when people can get the products they're required to use
Current California law requires the use of non-lead ammunition when taking animals by firearm anywhere in the state. But market availability and higher cost have made it difficult for some users to follow the law. Face-to-face purchasing requirements have further limited access, since local stores don't consistently carry lead-free ammunition, and current shortages of rimfire products, particularly .22 Long Rifle, make the problem worse. Improving access to lawful, lead-free ammunition strengthens compliance, supports wildlife recovery, and benefits hunting, ranching, and farming.
THE FOUR GUIDING PRINCIPLES
We affirm the following principles
Endorsing the coalition means supporting these principles. It requires no financial contribution, lobbying, or participation in specific activities.
1
We support reducing impacts to non-target species
Ingestion of spent lead ammunition can be prevented by using lead-free products.
2
We support the continued use and advancement of lead-free ammunition
Continued innovation, manufacturing, and distribution of high-quality lead-free ammunition benefits hunters, wildlife, and future conservation efforts.
3
We lead-free ammunition should be readily available throughout California
Hunters, ranchers, landowners, and wildlife managers should have practical access to the products necessary to comply with California's conservation requirements.
4
We encourage continued collaboration
Successful conservation depends upon partnership, practical solutions, and mutual respect among conservation organizations, hunters, ranchers, farmers, manufacturers, retailers, researchers, and public agencies.
WHAT WE'RE WORKING TOWARD
Objectives
The practical objectives that put these principles to work.
1
Improve availability of non-lead ammunition in the market through incentives, such as
coupons and free offerings.
2
Promote policies that incentivize the use of lead-free ammunition, such as lowering or eliminating tax on lead-free ammunition.
3
Support manufacturers developing new non-lead products, including funding research and development of hard-to-produce lead-free caliber products.
